The White Rose in British Horse Racing

York Dante Meeting – Friday 18th May 2018

My strongest bet of the day winning at 9/1 yesterday made for a very profitable and enjoyable day. A couple of places added more into the pot, but I’m kicking myself for not taking a chance on Main Desire after talking her up on here. A shorter blog than normal for the final day, time is running out after some unexpected work cropped up on me.

Here’s a little look at a couple of races tomorrow, no time for anything else!!….

The feature race on the final day is the Yorkshire Cup and I’d love nothing more than to see Stradivarius win this with ease and stamp his authority on the staying division. However, from a betting poiint of view I think Desert Skyline is a great bet at 8/1, he looks a great bet to place and could nick this. We have question marks over the front two in the betting, is Stradivarius fit enough to do himself justice today? Has he improve like has been said over the winter? Max Dynamite is the second favourite and since joining Willi Mullins he has done nothing but disappoint. He should prefer the return to flat racing today, but that has to be taken on trust and there is enough hanging over him for me to pass him up. That brings us onto Desert Skyline, a horse who looks sure to run his race. He isn’t the best horse in the race, and to win he will need others to underperform, but he is sure to give us a run for our money, and he can take advantage if others don’t perform on the day. I was surprised to see him so big at 8/1, with three places available for each way punters. His reappearence at Ascot was more than acceptable and he is sure to come on for that run.

The most interesting runner of the day for me is Charming Guest. She won nicely on her first run this year, before bettering that with a third at Doncaster. She finished behind Roussel in that race, and was beaten by less than two lenths. Roussel ran nicely yesterday at York, finishing third in a listed race to frank that form. Charming Guest now goes handicapping and if you take her form behind Roussel literally then she is incredibly well handicapped off just 75 when you consider Roussel ran to a mark in the low 100s yesterday. She has to handle running in a big field handicap, which is new to her but if she can handle that then I have high hopes for Charming Guest off this mark. She is priced up at 8/1 and worth a punt at that.

Ruth Carr x2 at Hamilton

One tracker horse and another who won nicely last time are worth mentioning here, both run at Hamilton tomorrow night and both are trained by Ruth Carr.

The tracker horse is Cosmic Chatter, who is currently 15/2 with the bookmakers. He ran an eye catching race at Pontefract, being held up and taking time to get a clear run before finishing well to take third near the line. He’s been lowered in the handicap by 1lb for that run, and continues to be on an extremely interesting handicap mark. I’m hoping he is ridden more prominently at Hamilton, and he looks to have a nice chance up there.

The previous winner is Mutarakez, again for Ruth Carr. I was at Ponte the day he won and thought he received a poor ride, just getting up on the line. While the ride was a winning one, so it couldn’t have been that bad, I’m sure this horse could have won by a few lengths had he wanted to. He has a 6lb penalty to carry here but this race looks a poor one and remembering how much he had in hand last time makes me think he can go in again.

This isn’t something I normally throw on the end, but thought these two were both mentioning after watching them run well last time out.

  1. Craig, not sure whether you know but two of the flat horses in the book have won over hurdles in the last week at 9/4 and 3/1?

  2. Morning Dave

Yes I’ve seen them, one of them I thought could go hurdling, but Innocent Touch was moved without me knowing, had I known he wouldn’t have been in the book. Both should continue to do well over hurdles, I’m hoping we see the other one on the flat at some point off a nice mark.
